The Smile Songs
Smiling is something we do when we see or hear something pleasant. We may laugh, or simply smile. We often impulsively smile when we pass by someone we don’t even now. Why is it we want to show a pleasant face to a complete stranger?
Smiles are contagious, and they project a positive feeling. Although there are people who tend to have negative outlooks, negativity is not a desirable trait. People are encouraged to smile through difficulties and sadness in order to make the situations of life less painful. However, smiles often conceal heartbreak and pain, and there are times when sadness and concern are appropriate.
It is true that no matter what is happening in your life, a positive outlook makes the body, mind, and soul feel better. Smiling and laughter can help to get through each day.
I always loved “Smiley” things. I used to collect smiley faces. I love the emoticons people use on their cell phones and computers. These are just some of the ways our society tries to project that joyful atmosphere.
As I was growing up, I learned quite a few songs that I still remember. Several of them have to do with smiles, and I often sing them (to myself). I love songs that make me want to smile.
These songs that are actually about smiling. You may remember these, too. The first one is sung to the tune “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” I believe I learned this one in Girl Scouts. It isn’t any trouble just to S-M-I-L-E It isn’t any trouble just to S-M-I-L-E So smile when you’re in trouble It will vanish like a bubble If you only take the trouble just to S-M-I-L-E It isn’t any trouble just to L-A-U-G-H It isn’t any trouble just to L-A-U-G-H So laugh when you’re in trouble It will vanish like a bubble If you only take the trouble just to L-A-U-G-H It isn’t any trouble just to G-R-I-N grin It isn’t any trouble just to G-R-I-N grin So grin when you’re in trouble It will vanish like a bubble If you only take the trouble just to G-R-I-N grin. The next song I learned in elementary school from our music teacher, Mrs. Wooten: Just let a smile be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy day. And when your sweetie cries, just tell her that a smile will always pay. Whenever skies are gray, don’t worry or fret; A smile will bring the sunshine, and you’ll never get wet. Just let a smile be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy day. This last song was written by Charlie Chaplin, and the most famous recording was by Nat King Cole: Smile, though your heart is aching. Smile, even though it’s breaking. When there are clouds in the sky, you’ll get by, if you smile through your fear and sorrow. Smile and maybe tomorrow, you’ll see the sun come shining through for you. Just light up your face with gladness; hide every trace of sadness. Although a tear may be ever so near, that’s the time you must keep on trying.
Smile, what’s the use of crying? You’ll find that life is still worthwhile, if you just smile. Joy and happiness in life are what we aspire to have, and the joy we have on the inside shines through to the outside, via smiles. Make sure you have more smiles in your life than frowns.
Have a great day!
