Madera County’s Green School was like so many other schoolhouses that dotted the landscape in the 19th century.
Built in 1890, it served the children in the foothills, from Picayune to Bates Station. Kids who lived a century ago in what is now Yosemite Lakes Park attended Green School. Things were pretty normal there — as normal as things got back in those days.
When kids came to school, they spent their day in a single room, about 16 by 30 feet in area. Their teacher came from her boarding place in a horse-drawn cart or buggy. They studied reading, writing, and arithmetic.
