Five Coyote wrestlers advance to Masters

Wrestling in the Central Section’s premier division is a tough task and advancing to the Central Section Master’s Tournament later this week is an accomplishment.


Five Madera Coyote wrestlers advanced to the maters with a 10th place or better finish at Saturday’s Div. I Championship at Clovis East High School.


Soloman Reyes, at 115 pounds, and Vincente Rodriguez, at 120 pounds, each won their ninth place match to advance.

Also advancing are Apolonio Ordaz (147 pounds), Julian Hernandez (162) and Sergio Rios (287).


Reyes opened his day with a pair of losses. however, he came back to win by a second period pin and a major decision to advance.


Ordaz also lost his first two matches, but recorded a technical fall for his lone win. He lost the ninth place match by a 6-1 decision.


Hernandez also lost his first two matches, but picked up a pin to advance to the ninth place match. However, he lost by a first period pin to place 10th.


Rodriguez had the most success of Madera wrestlers. Despite losing his first match, he won his second match just before the first period whistle sounded. After losing by pin, Rodriguez won his next match in 22 seconds with a pin and recorded a second period pin in the ninth place match.


Rios lost his first round match, but won in the consolations with a second period pin. He lost by a 2-0 decision in the next round, but picked up a second period pin in the next consolation round. He lost by a 3-2 decision to place 10th.
