A big rig recently struck a tire iron left in the roadway, rupturing its fuel tank and spilling approximately 30 gallons of fuel onto the dirt shoulder.
The incident required a coordinated response from CHP, Caltrans, and the Madera County Environmental Health Department to contain and clean up the spill.
“Thanks to the prompt response from our officers, most of the fuel was quickly contained — preventing a much larger spill and minimizing environmental impact,” said CHP Madera in a statement. “Something as small as a tool in the roadway can lead to serious consequences — not just for drivers, but for the environment. Secure your loads. Double-check your vehicles. And if you see debris on the road, report it when it’s safe to do so. One careless moment can create a dangerous situation for everyone.”
