Big Juneteenth Celebration planned

Black Saints United and the City of Madera will host its annual Juneteenth Celebration, and will feature a Gospelfest.

“I’m trying to make this the biggest one,” said Madera City Councilwoman Anita Evans.

The Celebration will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Courthouse Park. There will be gospel music, in addition to choirs, food vendors and fellowship.

“We have choirs, soloists, a saxophonist and praise dancers. Part of the band from my church will also play,” Evans said. “I’m just praying that everyone enjoys themselves. We will do our regular program, but it won’t be as long. I want the performing portion to take over.”

Deacon Ken Lane and his wife, Joyce, are the Juneteenth Celebration Award recipients.

In addition to the Celebration, there will be 28 vendors, including a face painter, the Madera Police Department handing out stickers and four booths from the Madera County Health Department.

There will also be three food trucks available — La Munchies559, Madtown Tacos and Burgers and Spill the Beans.

The entire community is invited to come out to celebrate Freedom Day.

“I will have chairs set up for 100 people,” Evans said. “We recommend people to bring chairs, as well. The weather forecast is set for 91, so it will be a great day. It should be about 80 at noon. Bring your walking shoes, enjoy the fellowship, and have a good time.”
