An ultra-light aircraft, left, lies in a field north of Avenue 17, not far from the Madera Municipal Airport and the Madera Municipal Golf Course. The aircraft crashed about 2:30 Thursday afternoon.

Two men were killed after an ultra-light plane they were in crashed, according to Madera Police Chief Dino Lawson.

Lawson said Madera Dispatch received a call from Fresno authorities, who reported they had lost touch with the plane.

The Fresno tower said the pilot reported he had overshot the Madera Municipal Airport runway, and that was the last the aircraft was heard from.

The pilot and passenger had not been identified as of press time Thursday, pending notification of next of kin.

Madera police, fire crews and an ambulance rushed to the crash scene, but the men aboard the plane were already dead when help arrived.
