Police dog, deputies roust burglary suspect in Oakhurst

Madera County sheriff’s deputies and their K9 unit caught and arrested a burglary suspect in Oakhurst after a standoff in the business that allegedly was being robbed.

A burglar alarm went off in the building in the 49000 block of Golden Oak Loopat 5:25 a.m. Oct. 6, and deputies were dispatched to investigate arrived at the scene and established a perimeter around the property after seeing activity at both the front and back doors.

Responding were Sgt. Larry Rich, Deputy Miguel Soto, Deputy Paul Chetwood, Deputy Jared Holladay, and Corporal Drew Kirchert with K-9 partner Arco.

Deputies gave commands for several minutes for the suspect to surrender himself, according to sheriff’s public information officer Kayla Serratto, but he wouldn’t budge.

Kirchert and Arco entered and searched the building along with Sgt. Dan Kerber, Deputy Ryan Videgan, and Chetwood. K-9 Arco ultimately located the suspect hiding in the attic.

The suspect, later identified as Isaac Lewis, had buried himself underneath the insulation in an attempt to hide. Arco guarded Lewis until he could be taken into custody.

Lewis, a 24 year old Oakhurst resident, was taken to the Madera County Department of Corrections without incident and booked on felony charges of commercial burglary, and misdemeanor charges of obstructing and resisting a peace officer.
