Quick goals leads Coyotes to win

Wendy Alexander/The Madera Tribune Members of the Madera Coyotes girls soccer team engulf Clarissa Gil after she scored the go-ahead goal in Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over Hoover.

The Madera Coyotes girls soccer team scored three goals in a three minute span in the second half to record a 3-1 victory over the Hoover-Fresno Patriots in its home opener.

The three second half goals countered an early Hoover goal for the Coyotes, who played three-quarters of the match without last year’s Madera Tribune girls soccer Most Valuable Player Mia Alvarez.

“It took time for us to settle in after Mia went down,” head coach Cameron Hill said. “We moved Brooke Gill to Mia’s position and she did really well. She got us going today. In the second half, she was all over the place. She was making things happen with her work. She stepped up big time.”

Gill tied the game in the second half. Clarissa Gil added another goal and Jasmin Pinon finished the scoring with an insurance goal.

“The first part of it, we were in control,” Hill said. “They scored the goal and it was deflating in a way. We responded well. It wasn’t bad. We made a couple of mistakes. We needed to change them and go on from there.”

The Coyotes had a few good scoring opportunities in the first half.

In the 13th minute, Hoover got the ball in front of the Madera goal and sent a shot. The ball bounced over goalkeeper Yesenia Montoya and found its way to the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

“It was kind of one of those things that happens in soccer,” Hill said. “You’ve seen it where one team has the ball and tries and tries and can’t score. And the other goes back and score. It was a bit lucky.”

Penolopi Leach got a breakaway and shot on goal. The ball was blocked by the keeper and Gill’s return shot went out of bounds in the 16th minute.

In the 30th minute, Anyssa Garcia sent a corner kick across the face of the goal. Leach went up and headed the ball on goal, but it was stopped.

In the second half, the Coyotes kept attacking at the Hoover net. In the ninth minute, Pinon had an open shot in the front, but shot to the left.

In the 12th minute, Pinon took the ball to the end line and sent a cross on goal. The keeper stopped the ball, but it came out. Leach just mist the rebound while running into the goal.

The Coyotes finally broke through in the 15th minute. Gill got the ball in front, settled the ball and sent a left-footed shot into the upper corner of the net to tie the score.

A minute later, Gill sent a cross on goal, but the keeper blocked the ball out. Gil was on the backside and sent an open shot into the right side of the net for the go-ahead goal.

Pinon added an insurance goal two minutes later. She got the ball on the left side, got by a defender and sent a shot into the far post for a 3-1 lead.

Madera’s defense held up the rest of the game and both teams couldn’t manage another quality scoring opportunity.
