The Matilda Torres baseball team surrounds pitcher Harnoor Hans (15) and congratulate each other after Tuesday’s 10-8 semifinal victory over the Sierra Chieftains. The win sent the Toros to the program’s first Central Section Championship game Friday at 4 p.m. against Monache at Valley Strong Ballpark in Visalia.

Toros overcome 6-0 deficit for first title game appearance

The Matilda Torres Toros were rocked on their heels early in Tuesday’s Div. V semifinal battle with the Sierra Chieftains.

The Chieftains scored six runs in the first two innings to jump out to the early lead. Then, the top-seeded Toros got into the swing of things to score 10 straight runs. They held off a late charge for a 10-8 victory to earn a berth in the program’s first Central Section championship game.

“We had to make a couple of adjustments,” head coach Bryan Rubalcaba said. “A few days off got us out of rhythm. We found it and did what we had to do.”
