Matilda Torres’ Sabrina Cerrillo goes up for a layup to score two of her team-leading nine points. She also had six rebounds and four steals in Thursday’s win over Sunnyside.

The Matilda Torres Toros girls basketball team shot 25 percent from the foul line, but did enough in the first quarter to make it a non-factor in a 40-28 victory over the Sunnyside-Fresno Wildcats.

The Toros took 16 free throws in the game, but made only four of them with no player making more than one. However, the Toros also forced 12 first quarter turnovers to jump to a 16-5 lead and held the lead the rest of the way for the North Yosemite League win Thursday evening.

“We were definitely a little more disciplined,” head coach Jose Villalobos said. “They run different things that is not traditional. It throws us off a little.”
