Stallions grab win over Rough Riders

The Madera South Stallions rebounded from a tough loss to the Hoover-Fresno Patriots with another three-set North Yosemite League victory.

In every other match in the NYL, the Stallions recorded sweeps, but lost in seven sets in two matches with the Patriots. The Stallions got back in the win column with a 25-21, 25-10, 25-13 victory over the Roosevelt-Fresno Rough Riders on Tuesday.

Jazlynn Vargas led the Stallions with 14 kills, including five in the final set. Anna Kajitani added six kills. The Stallions recorded 31 kills in the three sets while limiting the Rough Riders to just seven.

The Stallions had one player out for with a sprained ankle and another out with a concussion. That left head coach Travis McEowen with just eight players to work with, thus causing line-up changes against the Rough Riders.

It seemed like the Stallions took a while to get used to the new line-up in the first set.

The teams exchanged 12 side outs over the first 13 points. Madera South had the ball fall down on its own end three times.

Then, Roosevelt went on a six-point run that included two aces for a 12-6 lead.

The Stallions started to battle back. Vargas put down a kill. Karina Alvarado served up three points, including an ace. Angelina Aguirre served up two points to tie the set at 17.

Elissa Escobar served up an ace for a 19-18 lead. After a Roosevelt ball into the net, Kajitani served up the next four points to get to set point. Vargas and Jocelyn Prudente-Martinez put down kills and Kajitani had an ace in the run.

The Rough Riders scored the next two points, but missed a serve for a 25-21 Madera South win.

In the second set, Vargas put down a kill and Escobar served up an acefor a 3-0 lead.

After a Prudente-Martinez side out kill, she served up an ace in a three-point run for an 8-4 lead.

Diana Moreno served up an ace for a 10-6 lead. Vargas put down two kills for a 14-7 lead.

Aguirre served up seven straight points. She had two aces in the run while Prudente-Martinez had two kill. Roosevelt hit out of bounds twice for a 22-9 Stallions’ lead.

After a missed Roosevelt serve, Vargas put down a pair of kills for a 25-10 victory.

With the third set tied at three, Moreno served the next 12 points for a 15-3 lead. Moreno had three aces in the run. Aguirre and Kajitani put down three kills each.

Vargas put down a side out kill and followed that with two more kills while Aguirre served for a 19-5 lead.

Escobar served up two more points with a Moreno set kill to the back line and a Vargas block to take a 22-7 lead.

After Roosevelt recorded an ace, Vargas won a joust at the net for a block and Roosevelt hit out of bounds for set point.

The Rough Riders scored four straight points before the Stallions won the match on the fifth match point, 25-13.
