MPD identifies homicide victim

For The Madera Tribune

A driver hit a tree stump on the side of the road, which caused her vehicle to flip onto the driver’s side on Saturday. The driver was found to be twice over the legal limit and was arrested with a DUI.

The Madera Police Department responded to an assault scene at Nebraska Avenue and Riverside Drive.

The victim was walking on Riverside Drive at 6:30 p.m. Saturday when he was approached by a vehicle.

A male suspect exited the vehicle, approached the victim and a verbal confrontation took place. During the argument, the suspect used a weapon to stab the victim. The victim succumbed to his wounds at the scene. This appears to be an isolated incident and an active investigation is currently being conducted.

The victim has been identified as 38-year-old Andres Espejo of Madera.

Madera Police announced Monday they have made an arrest into the stabbing. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Angel Martinez, was located in the 100 block of El Dorado Drive on Monday morning and was arrested.

“We would like to offer our condolences to the family and friends of Andres Espejo,” Madera PD said in a statement. “This alone will not take his place, but we hope it does bring some comfort and closure knowing the person responsible will be held accountable.”

DUI sees car on its side

The MPD made four driving under the influence arrests over the weekend.

One of the arrests involved a traffic collision that resulted in a car on its side.

Jacqueline Mancha hit a tree stump on the side of the road, causing her vehicle to flip onto the driver’s side. Mancha was found to be DUI and driving with a blood alcohol concentration level over twice the legal limit. Luckily, Mancha was not injured during the collision.
