Liberty pounds Madera South in tournament
CLOVIS — The Liberty Hawks softball team pounded the Madera South Stallions to the tune of 19 runs with four extra-base hits to open the Buchanan Preseason Tournament at Buchanan High School.
The Hawks scored 11 runs in the first and eight runs in the second to force a 15-run, three-inning mercy rule Wednesday afternoon.
Thirteen different Hawks had hits in the game. Maci Whaley, Desi Sanchez, Katelyn Edmonson and Madison Pena each hit doubles. Rylee Bocchini, Lauren Chapman and Sayler Steiner each drove in three runs. Paige Chapman scored three runs.
Karsyn Bauer, Lauren Chapman and Kaley Bowe, who each threw an inning, combined for a perfect game with five strikeouts.
The Hawks sent 19 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. Bocchini and Chapman hit sacrifice flies to open the scoring. Then, the next 12 batters reached base. Steiner drove in two with a single and Bocchini drove in another two with a single as Liberty led 11-0.
Paige Chapman drove in two in the inning while Steiner drove in three in the first. Katelyn Edmonson, Paige Chapman and Ari Aguayo each drove in a run.
The Hawks then sent 12 batters to the plate in the second to score eight runs on seven hits. After Bauer reached on an error to lead off the inning, the next five batters had hits. After a groundout, the next three batters reached base. Pena drove in two with a double to right center. Hailey Myers, Kayla Fien, Lauren Chapman, Whaley, Nevaeh Lamattina and Mackie Boatwright each drove in runs during the second.
