The Association of Mexican American Educators has announced the winner for their poster for Dia del Maestro (Day of the Teacher).

The AMAE announced Madera High School freshman Janelle Delgado will receive a $1,000 scholarship for her winning poster design for Dia del Maestro, which is May 15.

A brief history of Dia del Maestro had its origin in Mexico in 1917 when a group of students in San Luis Portosi began honoring their favorite teacher, Sr. Isidro on May 15. Later, the tradition began to include all teachers throughout the country. El Dia del Maestro is celebrated every May 15.

This honored tradition became part of California State history when, in 1985, the Association of Mexican American Educators requested the state legislature to establish the second Wednesday in May as Day of the Teacher to honor and support the many teachers who are dedicated to educating our youth.

AMAE continues to support this tradition of celebrating this important day each year throughout California. Some of the ways this occurs are with the statewide Dia del Maestro Poster Contest, which is open to anyone in California; honoring Teachers of the Year at chapter Award Dinners and through schools and communities holding Salute to Education Week with luncheons or recognition of teachers.
