Stallions get win over McLane

With a big tournament coming this weekend, the Madera South Stallions girls water polo team used its match against McLane-Fresno as a tune-up.
The Stallions scored four goals in the first quarter and cruised to an 11-4 victory Tuesday afternoon.
Jackie Alvarado led the Stallions with three goals. Standout goalie Jatzelle Salazar scored two second half goals while making four saves in the first half. Berenize Tapia also scored two goals.
The Stallions continue play in the Clovis West Tournament this weekend.
Madera South opened the scoring with a goal with 4:21 left in the quarter. Off a pass from Kevelin Pinto, Sayra Montesinos found the upper left corner for the goal.
About a minute late, Pinto got the ball on the right and sent a pass to Montesinos in the middle. Montesinos sent the ball to the left to Alvarado, who shot into the near corner for a 2-0 lead.
The Stallions extended the lead to three with a goal with 2:58 left in the quarter, about 30 seconds after their previous goal. Emily Furtado sent a pass to Tapia. Tapia sent a long shot into the right corner for a 3-0 lead.
After a McLane goal, the Stallions scored a goal at the end of the first quarter.
Salazar found a wide open Samantha Batt up the pool. She shot off the bottom of the crossbar and the ball hit the back of the McLane goalie and rolled into the net for the fourth goal of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Montesinos found Juleana Ruiz wide open in the middle. Ruiz found the upper left corner for the goal and a 5-1 lead.
After a pair of Salazar saves, the Stallions got a fast break goal. After catching a McLane shot attempt, Salazar sent a pass up the pool to Alvarado, who was wide open. Alvarado took her time and found the back of the net for a 6-1 lead with 2:41 left in the first half.
In the third period, Alvarado scored her third goal of the match with a shot from the left side off a pass from Batt to open a 7-1 lead with 4:19 left.
About a minute later, Madera South was in a man-advantage. Salazar sent a long shot into the right corner for the goal and an 8-1 lead.
McLane turned a steal into a goal, but the Stallions scored late in the third quarter.
With 10 seconds left, in another man-advantage, Salazar’s long shot found the back of the net for a 9-2 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
After a McLane goal, the Coyotes got a goal from Pinto. She got the ball in the middle, turned and shot into he net for the goal and a 10-3 lead.
McLane took advantage of a man-up situation with a goal with 3:19 left in the quarter.
The Stallions closed the scoring with 2:49 left in the match. Tapia got the ball on the right and found the near corner for the goal and an 11-4 victory.
