Stallions can’t keep up with Apaches

Madera South’s Nate Adams shoots a 3-pointer during Tuesday’s loss to the Sanger Apaches in County/Metro Athletic Conference play.

Despite its last victory over the Sanger Apaches, the Madera South Stallions boys basketball team knew this game could help improve its playoff position next week.

However, the Stallions couldn’t get anything going early in a 78-55 County/Metro Athletic Conference loss to the Sanger Apaches in their final regular season home game Tuesday.

The Stallions were outscored 38-22 in the first half and didn’t have enough firepower in the second half against the Apaches, the same team Madera South beat in overtime two weeks ago.

The Stallions shot 27 percent in the first three quarters while getting outscored 59-35.

“We don’t play well at home,” head coach Jody Sharp said. “I don’t know what the problem is, but we just don’t do well here.”

Hakeem Primes led the Stallions with 18 points, but he was the only Stallions player in double figures. For the second game in a row, Primes scored nine fourth quarter points to lead the team. “He doesn’t quit,” Sharp said. “He plays hard all the time.”

Andre Johnson scored nine points as 11 other Stallions scored.

The Stallions got a 3-pointer from Johnson and a Primes layup to jump out to a 5-3 lead. Sanger went on a 9-0 run and extended the run to 17-1 for a 20-6 lead.

The Stallions closed the quarter with a Johnson 3-pointer, a Victor Daza layup and a Jayshawn Thomas free throw to cut the lead to 20-12.

After Elijah Ford opened the second quarter with a bucket, Sanger scored nine straight points to move the lead to 15.

Luke Dillon, who led the Apaches with 22 points with six 3-pointers, hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Two free throws and a bucket gave the Apaches a 36-17 lead.

The Stallions got a 3-pointer from Ralph White and two free throws from Primes to close the half trailing 38-22.

The Stallions tried to keep up with the Apaches. Johnson hit a 3-pointer and Primes converted a 3-point play, but the Apaches came back with 12 points to open a 50-28 third quater lead.

Primes stopped the run with layup and Junior Segura made a layup. However, the Apaches got another 3-pointer from Dillon and one by Leo Leon to open the lead to 56-31.

Nate Adams hit a 3-pointer and Kingsley Thomas made a free throw, but Sanger still led 59-35 at the end of the third quarter.

After a Sanger layup, David Thomas hit a 3-pointer. Sanger added five points before a Joel Galvin jumper. Three Stallions free throws answered a Sanger 3-pointer. Primes made a layup to answer two Sanger free throws. Two more Sanger layups led to another Primes layup to answer.

Primes added a free throw and Xavier Garcia scored down low. After a Sanger bucket, Primes hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 22. After a Sanger 3-pointer, Amire Green closed out the scoring with a layup for a 78-55 final.
