Maderans help Bobcats win invite
The UC Merced women’s cross country team captured the Pacific Union College Invitational in Angwin to go along with the men’s championship.
Angelica Costilla (Madera South) placed fourth in the race and third on the team to help the Bobcats to the title. The Bobcats are also coached by Sofia Rios (Madera South) and Vincente Velarde (Madera).
Dominique Andrews (Madera South) was second on the UC Merced women’s volleyball team with six kills in a three-set loss to Menlo College on Sept. 23.
In a battle of former Madera players Sept. 24, Andrews came away with the win, recording nine kills in a three-set win over University of Antelope Valley and Miranda Brunner (Madera). Brunner had seven digs in the match win.
In another battle of former Madera players, Marcus McCoy’s (Madera South) Upper Iowa Peacocks defeated Kris Bueno’s (Madera) Minot State Beavers on Sept. 24. Bueno didn’t get to see the field and McCoy recorded two tackles.
Brielle Hefner (Madera) recorded five kills in a three-set win over Wyoming for the Fresno State Bulldogs women’s volleyball team.
William Penn women’s volleyball player Lilly Martinez (Madera South) recorded two kills in a three-set win over Peru State on Sept. 24. She added another kill in a four-set loss to Culver-Stockton.
Vincent Espinoza (Madera) was 12-of-21 for 110 yards and a touchdown for West Hills College in the Falcons’ 44-28 victory over the Merced Blue Devils on Sept. 24. He also rushed for 16 yards on four carries.
Merced College’s Kinsey Kerby (Madera) put down six kills in a four-set win over Cerro Coso on Sept. 23. She added two kills in a Wednesday victory over Reedley.
Sophia Zertuche (Madera South) scored her second goal of the season in Wednesday’s victory over Cerritos for the Fresno City College women’s soccer team.
College of the Sequoias’ Logan Pierce (Liberty) was second on the team with seven tackles in a 40-37 victory over Sierra. Pierce led the team with six solo tackles to go with a quarterback sack, two tackle for losses and an interception.
