Cal Fire: Detwiler Fire caused by firearms

Investigators for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection have announced the cause of the Detwiler Fire: the discharge of firearms on public lands.

The fire burned 81,826 acres, destroyed 131 structures, and menaced several towns, including Mariposa. It started July 16 in an area served by the Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit of Cal Fire.

A $2,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.

Anyone with information regarding the person or persons responsible for starting the blaze is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 498-7867. Callers can remain anonymous.
