The Matilda Torres Toros boys cross country team celebrates winning a Div. III Central Section championship with the plaque and coaches after Thursday’s victory at Woodward Park.

FRESNO — For the second year in a row, the Matilda Torres Toros boys cross country team have been named a CIF Central Section Champion, this time in Div. III.

Last year, the Toros won the Div. IV title, and this year, they dominated the Div. III championship with 37 points, almost 100 points better than second place on Thursday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

“Today was a day to run the race and run together as a team,” head coach Jose Herrera said. “They’ve been running all summer and know the talent they have. They are a good team and one of the best in the state in our division. They knew they could win this race. I told them to secure the win and run together and run hard. It was not the times we were looking at that we planned out heading into state next week. We have 10 days to fix the little things and get ready for Saturday.”
