Torres volleyball still feeling growing pains

Torres’ Bryance Gonzales reaches up for a kill attempt during Monday’s loss to Washington Union. She led the Toros with nine kills.

The Matilda Torres Toros girls volleyball team had glimpses of improvement, but then fell backwards in a four-set loss to Washington Union in its home opener.

The Toros won the first set 25-20, but lost the next three, 25-20, 25-10, 25-22. Torres hit the ball into the net 10 times in the four sets and also hit 13 balls out of bounds.

“The first set, even though we won, there wasn’t a lot of pressure being put on us,” head coach Adam Horner said. “Once we started getting pressure, we collapsed. We fell into bad habits. You can’t have that many hitting errors and expect to compete in the game. We had too many errors.”
