Stallions bounce back after loss

After suffering a tough five-set loss to Bullard-Fresno the night before, the Madera South Stallions girls volleyball team bounced back and quickly put away an inferior Roosevelt-Fresno team.
The Stallions led Bullard 2-1, but played their two worst sets of the evening in the fourth and fifth sets leading to their second straight five-set loss to Bullard on Tuesday.
Madera South came back with a 75-42 rout of Roosevelt in a three-set sweep. In the sweep, Madera South racked up 35 aces and just 22 kills.
Arelis Chavez combined for 24 kills in the two matches to lead the team.
Madera South 3, Roosevelt 0
After a five-set thriller the night before the Stallions quickly put away the Rough Riders in three quick sets.
Only about 16 hours passed since the final point was scored against Bullard to the first serve against Roosevelt, but the Stallions didn’t show any signs of fatigue.
Veronica Ramirez served up two aces to open the match. After a Chavez side out kill, Jewelyana Rodriguez served up three straight aces. Chavez recorded another side out kill and Danae Prudente served up five straight points, including two aces and a kill from Jazlyn Vargas.
Leading 12-4, Chavez recorded another side out kill and served up six straight points with four aces.
Two side out kills from Hannah Eades and another from Rodriguez gave the Stallions a 22-10 lead.
Eades served an ace and Chavez put down a side out for set point. Roosevelt scored two points before hitting into the net for a service error and a 25-12 Stallions’ victory.
Rodriguez opened the second set with a kill and Vargas served up an ace for a 3-0 lead.
After an Eades side out kill, Rodriguez served up six straight points, including three aces. Chavez and Ramirez put down kills in the run for a 10-1 lead.
Chavez put down a side out kill and Eades recorded three more aces to open a 14-4 lead.
Prudente served up three aces and Chavez put down a kill for a 19-5 lead. Jacklyn Guglielmana served an ace for a 23-8 lead. Vargas put down a side out kill for set point.
Madera South had trouble getting the final point in the set and committed three errors while the Rough Riders served up an ace. The Stallions won the set on a Roosevelt missed serve, 25-13.
After Roosevelt opened the third set with a kill for their only lead, Madera South scored the next four points beginning with a Rodriguez solo block. Vargas served up three more points. After a Roosevelt missed serve, Rodriguez served up three more points, including an ace.
Chavez put down a side out kill and Prudente added another kill for an 11-4 lead.
After another Chavez side out kill, Ramirez served up six straight points with four aces and an 18-5 lead.
Clarissa Escobar served up three aces while Rodriguez put down a side out kill. Guglielmana closed out the match with two straight aces for a 25-7 victory.
Bullard 3, Madera South 2
The Stallions battled tough in the first set, but then won the next two to take a lead. However, Bullard battled back and took advantage of Stallion mistakes to win the final two sets and the match.
The Knights jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the first set. Rodriguez served up an ace and Guglielmana recorded a kill after redirecting a bad pass that found a hole in the Bullard defense to cut the lead to five.
Side out kills from Chavez and Vargas kept the lead at five. Off an assist from Rodriguez, Vargas put down a kill and Guglielmana served an ace for a 21-18 Bullard lead. Ramirez and Rodriguez combined on a block to cut the lead to two.
After a Vargas side out kill, Ramirez served up two aces to tie the set at 22.
Bullard put down a side out kill for set point, but Rodriguez recorded a side out kill. Prudente put down another kill and Madera South had set point, but hit the ball into the net.
The Knights eventually got set point again, but missed its serve. They got the side out back for their third set point, but Chavez put down a kill. Madera South missed its next serve and the Knights finished the game with a kill for a 29-27 win.
Madera South jumped to an early lead in the second set behind kills from Chavez, Rodriguez and Guglielmana.
However, Bullard climbed back for a 12-9 lead. The Knights maintained their two-point lead despite kills from Ramirez, Rodriguez and Vargas. A solo block by Chavez cut the lead down to one. After a Chavez side out kill, Prudente served up two straight points for an 18-17 lead.
Bullard came back with four straight points to open a 22-19 lead before a Ramirez side out kill. Ramirez added another kill and Guglielmana served up a point to tie the set at 22.
Bullard scored two straight points for set point, but the Stallions got the side out.
Vargas and Rodriguez combined on a block and Bullard hit out of bounds for a Madera South set point.
The Stallions hit the ball into the net for a Bullard side out, but Rodriguez got a side out kill. Chavez and Rodriguez combined on a dual block for a 27-25 Stallions’ victory.
Madera South began to take control of the third set after a Prudente ace for a 13-11 lead. Chavez served up a point to increase the lead to three. Vargas put down a tip kill and Ramirez recorded a back row kill and an ace for a 21-15 Stallions lead.
Prudente and Chavez put down kills and Madera South led 23-17. The Knights got the side out, but Ramirez got a kill off a push set for set point. Chavez ended the set with a kill for a 25-18 win.
Madera South couldn’t seem to get a lot of things right in the fourth set. They only scored 11 points and scored just three points with serve. Bullard had six different three-plus-point runs, including the final three points of the set, for a 25-11 victory.
Bullard kept its momentum through the fifth set by jumping out to a 6-3 lead.
Chavez recorded a kill with a bump that found the back line. Ramirez put down another kill and Madera south trailed by one. After a Bullard side out kill, Ramirez put down a kill and Bullard hit out of bounds to tie the set at seven.
However, the Knights went on a six-point run that included two aces for a 13-7 lead.
Ramirez stopped the run with a kill, but a missed serve and a Bullard kill ended the match with a 15-8 Bullard win.
