Stallion girls win game on the boards

Madera South’s Arelis Chavez powers her way to the hoop to score two of her 12 points. She recorded a double-double against the Coyotes with 12 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass.

 

The Madera-Madera South girls basketball rivalry is starting to become one after Madera won the first 15 meetings between the two schools.


After Madera South defeated the Coyotes for the first time in 2018, the Stallions picked apart the Coyotes in a 45-32 victory Wednesday in Joe Flores Gym for their third win over Madera.


In Wednesday’s victory, the Stallions outrebounded Madera 34-22. Madera South’s Arelis Chavez scored 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass.


Jonese Feliu scored 13 points and had four steals. Alannah Ward hit three 3-pointers.


Shalynn Garcia led the Coyotes with eight points. Andrea Garcia scored seven points.


Madera South shot just four-of-13 from the free throw line. Meanwhile Madera was nine-of-16 from the stripe. They also hit six 3-pointers, but made just one field goal inside of 10 feet.


Madera South started the game on a 9-0 run and never looked back. Maria Hernandez started the run with a 3-pointer. Chavez made a layup and put back a missed shot.


Kim Prudente hit a jumper for a 9-0 Madera South lead.


Rhynne Mitchell stopped the run with two free throws, but the Stallions scored four more with a Chavez offensive putback and a Feliu layup to open an 11-point lead.


Lilly Smith stopped the run with a 3-pointer, but Feliu answered with one of her own.


Garcia hit a 3-pointer for the Coyotes, but Chavez put back a miss for an 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.


It took three minutes before any team scored in the second quarter. Garcia hit a 17-foot jumper to cut the Stallions’ lead to eight.


Ward hit the first of her 3-pointers to open the lead back to 11. Mitchell hit a 3-pointer to answer.


Ward hit her second 3-pointer while Garcia hit another 3-pointer before the end of the first half with Madera South leading 24-16.


Jasmine Levy made two-of-four free throws and Aasyria Goins hit a 16-foot jumper for a 7-0 Madera run to cut the lead to four three minutes into the third quarter.


Madera South went on a 6-1 run to get the lead back to nine. Feliu made a layup to start the run. After an Andrea Garcia free throw for the Coyotes, Chavez hit a short jumper. Jocelyn Barrera hit a 10-foot jumper for a 30-21 lead.


Madera’s Kaylee Patlan scored on a drive to the hoop for Madera’s lone field goal inside 10 feet. She was fouled on the play and made the free throw to convert the 3-point play for a 30-24 Stallions’ lead heading into the fourth quarter.


Madera South got layups from Chavez and Feliu to get the lead back to 10.


Garcia hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to seven. The Stallions put the game out of reach with a six-point burst.


Barrera hit a 10-foot jumper, Feliu made a free throw and Ward sank a 3-pointer to open a 40-27 lead.


Goins hit one-of-three free throws to stop the run and Shalynn Garcia hit a 3-pointer to get within nine with two minutes left.


Madera South kept the pressure up with two Feliu free throws and a 12-foot jumper from Barrera to get the lead to 44-31.


Patlan made a free throw, but the Coyotes couldn’t mount a comeback. Feliu closed the scoring with a free throw for a 45-32 victory.
