Every year, on the last weekend of September, Madera County celebrates Old Timers Day. It is an annual tradition that began 94 years ago in 1931.
This morning, I read Bill Coate’s account of the history of Old Timers Day, and I was astonished to learn that, in 1931, the celebration honored all who had lived in the county since 1890.
Now, I have always been pretty good at math. It is just simple arithmetic, though, that tells me that in 1931, Madera County considered anyone who had been in the county for 41 years to be an “Old Timer.”
