Madera’s Samuel McDonald rises up for a block during Thursday’s five-set win over Sanger West. McDonald led the Coyotes with 24 kills, including four in the deciding fifth set.

With the playoffs on the horizon, the young Madera Coyotes boys volleyball team closed out the regular season with a five-set victory over the Sanger West Hornets in Joe Flores Gym.

In what would have been Senior Night for the Coyotes, the team celebrated a win in which they won the final two sets for the victory. The Coyotes, for the first time in head coach Rhonda Jefferson-Counsel’s long career, did not have a senior player.

Madera suffered its lumps, but were in quite a few matches against teams with a lot of seniors, some with eight or nine.
