Madera South’s Bianca Guevara rises up for a kill in Tuesday’s win over Hoover. She recorded a game-high 17 kills in the victory.

After suffering losses to Clovis North and Minarets to open the season, the Madera South Stallions girls volleyball team picked up its first full match win in convincing fashion over the Hoover-Fresno Patriots.

The Stallions won the first and fourth sets by a dominant 50-28 margin. However, Hoover battled tough in a 25-20 loss in the second set before outplaying Madera South to a 25-19 win in the third set.

“We are learning all around,” head coach Travis McEowen said. “Hoover really pressed us and fought hard. We didn’t know how to fight back in that third set. We’re just working different positions and learning what we can do in different game situations. Nothing much has changed with Kiara in our out of the libero jersey in that third set. We were out-dug, out-hit and out-blocked by Hoover.”

Bianca Guevara led the Stallions with 17 kills, including scoring five of the final six points to get the Stallions close in the fourth set.

“Bianca is definitely leading by example with blood, sweat and tears in practice,” McEowen said.

The Stallions played Buchanan in Clovis on Thursday before hosting teams in the Madera South Classic this weekend.

“Hoover was a good match for us,” McEowen said. “It was a good win, but we have a bigger and better Buchanan up next for us.”

The Stallions started off the match on the right foot. Arelis Chavez put back a Hoover overpass for a quick 2-0 lead.

Kiara Alvarado served up an ace and Guevara put down two kills for a 6-2 lead.

After Jacky Guglielmana put down a kill, she served up three points to increase the lead to seven points.

Setter Jacky Granados served up three more points to open the lead to 10. After a kill by Chavez, Hoover hit out of bounds for a 17-6 Stallions lead.

Ellie Morales served up an ace to open the lead to 11 and Chloe Riddle served up a point for a 12-point lead.

Hoover battled back with four kills and a solo block to cut the lead to 21-13. However, Madera South got two side outs and a Hoover double-contact violation gave the Stallions set point. Veronica Ramirez closed the set with a kill for a 25-15 victory.

Ramirez opened the second set with a kill and served up a point for a two-point lead. Despite a solo block from Chavez and a bump kill from Guevara, Hoover jumped out to a 7-5 lead.

Granados stopped the run with a dump kill. Guglielmana served up three straight points, including a kill from Ramirez for a 9-7 lead. Hoover scored three straight points to claim a 10-9 lead. An ace opened the lead to two.

Alvarado made a pancake dig that led to a Stallions’ side out and Ramirez served up a point to tie the set at 13.

Hoover scored three straight points to take the lead back before a missed serve.

Guevara recorded a solo block and Alvarado served up a point to tie the set at 16. Anna Kajitani served up a point for an 18-17 Madera South lead.

Hoover scored two points to take the lead back before a double-contact violation gave Madera South the side out.

Hoover quickly got the side out back, but a block from Ramirez gave the serve to Guevara, who didn’t stop until the set was over.

Guevara served up five straight points, including an ace, to go with another solo block from Ramirez. Hoover hit into the net on set point for a 25-20 Stallions’ win.

In the third set, the Stallions couldn’t do anything right early and Hoover jumped out to a 10-2 lead.

Any time Madera South seemed to be getting momentum, Hoover came up with a kill or Madera South made a mistake.

The Stallions trailed 20-9 late in the set and scored just one point when they had serve and also missed three serves.

Guevara recorded a side out kill and another with serve. After a Hoover kill, Guevara put down a tip kill and then got another kill off the Hoover block. Alvarado’s ace cut the lead to 21-15 before the Stallions were called into the net.

Guevara put down a side out kill and served up a point to cut the lead to six before she missed her next serve to give the Patriots set point.

Destiny Perez put down a tip kill and Granados served up a point. However, Hoover got a kill off the block for a 25-19 victory.

Hoover jumped out to the early lead before the Stallions reigned them in. Chavez put down a kill on a Hoover overpass, Guevara recorded a side out kill, Guglielmana put down a kill and Riddle served up an ace for a 7-5 lead.

After a trade in side outs, Guglielmana served up four aces in a row to increase the lead to 13-7.

Guevara then put down a side out and served up three straight points, including a solo block from Jewely-Ana Rodriguez for a 17-8 lead.

Hoover cut the lead to seven before a Chavez side out kill. Alvarado served up an ace for a 21-11 lead.

Hoover got the side out and Madera South hit out of bounds to cut the lead to eight before Hoover hit out of bounds.
