Coyotes win at Sunnyside Sprint Meet

For the first time in school history, the Madera Coyotes swim team took home the first place trophy at the Sunnyside Sprint Meet.

The win was the first in the 23 years of the meet for the Coyotes swim team, who are defending Div. II Valley Champions.

The Coyotes defeated Golden West-Visalia by 26 points and Selma by 33 points for the championship.

Madera’s 100 medley relay team and 100 freestyle relay teams won while Madera placed in the top six in almost every event.

Emily Lopez-Ibarra placed third in the 25-yard butterfly, narrowly missing out on second place by .06 seconds.

Tara Goertzen placed second in the 50-yard freestyle and teammate Nicole Gibbs placed sixth to earn points for the team.

Lola Gill was second in the 25-yard backstroke while Goertzen was second in the 50-yard breaststroke with Katie Ylarregui in sixth place.

In he 50-yard backstroke, Lola Gill placed third and Nicole Gibbs also placed third in the 25-yard breaststroke.

Lopez-Ibarra placed third in the 50-yard butterfly.

Gibbs and Goertzen tied for third in the 25-yard freestyle, earning 7.5 points each to the team total after touching the wall in 12.11 seconds.
