Supporting local veterans while enjoying an extensive Easter breakfast brought Madera families to the Veterans of Foreign War social hall on Sunday. Post 1981 serves a fundraising breakfast once a month.
“We usually get about 100 people at our monthly breakfast,” said member David Valdivia, who was selling tickets at the door.
The $7 breakfast included scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and ham. Potatoes, waffles, pancakes, coffee and orange juice completed the meal, with seconds for those who desired.
At 10 a.m., the post had served 140 and the people were still coming in.
This month, VFW members were assisted with cooking and serving by high school students.
“These are high school football players,” said Madera South High School football coach Matt Johnson.
He and fellow coach John Villa supervised more than a dozen varsity football players from both Madera and Madera South high schools who gave up their own Easter morning fun to work as scullery staff for the VFW.
