3 county students win prizes in Poetry Out Loud readings

Glacier High School student Chloe DePledge has won the Madera County finals competition for Poetry Out Loud.

Glacier is a charter high school in Oakhurst.

The Madera County Arts Council hosted the Madera County Finals Competition for Poetry Out Loud Feb. 10 at Circle Gallery. Students from Madera High School, Madera South High School, Liberty High School, Glacier High School and Voyager Secondary School competed in two rounds.

This is not the first poetry honor that has been bestowed on DePledge. She was chosen to read for state poet Laureate Dana Gioia when he visited the Madera County Library last fall fall, an appearance hosted by Friends of the Madera County Library.

For winning first place in Poetry Out Loud competition, DePledge was given a cash prize of $150.

She recited of “Love (III)” by George Herbert and “Be Music, Night” by Kenneth Patchen.

She will represent Madera County at the state finals competition in Sacramento on March 18 and 19.

Christopher Linares of Madera High School won the second place prize of $75 and Mei Chen of Liberty High School won the third place prize of $50.
