FRESNO — The Clovis contingent for the South team was too much for the five Madera players in the 28th annual North/South All-Star boys volleyball match at Fresno State University’s South Gym.

Clovis won the state championship and were led by Trey Lake, Max Ogas and Ahktar Dhokthar to power the South team past the North team in three sets, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20, Wednesday.

County/Metro Athletic Conference champions Madera South was represented by Javier Arreguin, Javier Gil, Carlos Hernandez and Abraham Alapizco. Representing the Div. II Valley Champions Madera Coyotes was Devonte Orlando.

“It was a pretty good game to play with different players like Devonte, one of our rivals,” Alapizco said. “I feel like we started to connect at the end. It makes it special to end with these guys (Madera South teammates). These are the guys I was the closest to.”

“It feels great,” Orlando said. “I can’t put it into words to be the only one picked for Madera. It was pretty cool and a privilege to play. It was different to play with Madera South, but there’s no beef. It feels amazing to make history for Madera and bring that pride back.”

Hernandez led the South team with nine kills while Orlando recorded seven. Arreguin added three kills.

Gil helped get the North team back into the third set with five aces and two of his five kills. Alapizco also recorded two aces and was the team’s main setter.

Also coaching for the North was CMAC co-Coach of the Year Steve Guglielmana, along with Nate Perez and Taylor Beakes.
