Madera vermouth takes trophy in global contest

The 2017 International Wine Challenge in London recently honored a Madera vermouth as the best in the competition by bestowing its Vermouth Trophy on Vya Sweet Vermouth.

Vya brand vermouths are produced by Quady Winery in Madera. They were created by winery co-founder Andrew Quady nearly two decades ago after a friend challenged him to do so. Prior to this, the winery had been recognized for its muscat based wines.

“Speaking for our talented winemaking team, Mike Blaylock, Darin Peterson and Cole Dennis, we are honored for the recognition of our achievement in the most important vermouth style, classic sweet or rosso vermouth,” said Quady.

At the London competition, wines of all varietals, regions, and styles were blind taste-tested during two stages of judging. From there, gold medal recipients compete for trophy medals, which were awarded May 22. Only a single gold medal winner — the best in its category — could be awarded a designated trophy medal, according to Quady Winery.
