Not even rain stopped Madera Speedway last weekend

The track was wet with running water flowing down the speedway surface when the fourth annual Second Wind 5K to benefit the Madera Rescue Mission and Madera County Food Bank took place early Saturday morning at the Madera Speedway.

The run/walk/sprint at the Madera Speedway is a major fundraiser for both the Madera Rescue Mission and the Madera County Food Bank.

Several hours after the run concluded, the rain stopped and the Madera Speedway crew began the process of pumping water and drying the race track and pit area for the “club race” that was scheduled for the evening.

“We have a reputation of getting races in at Madera,” track owner Kenny Shepherd said. “Even though this was just what we call a local club race, I’m very proud of our team for working as hard as they do to make this happen.”

Once the facility was dry and ready to transition from people power to horsepower, it was time for racing by local drivers, and some of the new late model teams as well as a few of the television drivers tuning cars for April 29.

When the final checkered flag fell on this club night of racing, it was Bert Stephens, then Tyler Herzog and DJ Lander in the top three of the MST division.

Eric Woods, Mike Marly and Thomas Mcgray were in the top three of the Toyota Sedans. Matt Erickson, Dillion Tucker and Henk Gaalswyk Jr placed the top three in the Madera late models Zack Green, Mike Kelperis, and Hiroyuki Ueno were in the top three in the Southwest Tour Trucks. And Chuck Aguirre and Verg Beaty were 1-2 in the Hobby Stocks.

The next race event at the Madera Speedway is Saturday with the Pombo/Sargent Tribute open wheel event. The next televised event and race for the RPM Mortgage Pro Late Model Series and the 51FIFTY Energy Drink Jr Late Model Series is April 29. Visit www.racemadera.com for information.
