'Clash of cultures' in color

Wednesday, July 02, 2008

Downtown Debate - Part 3 of a series

City core highlights differences

The Madera City Council has repeatedly heard loud and numerous complaints from residents about the unregulated bright paint colors of oranges, yellows, blues, and greens adorning some of the storefronts in Madera's downtown, especially along Yosemite Avenue.

"I think it would be safe to say (the color issue) is a clash of cultures issue," said Jim Taubert, executive director of the Madera Redevelopment Agency.

"People don't want to talk (publicly) about it. But if it wasn't a fact, and wasn't so dominant in The (Madera Tribune's) Red Line (forum), it would be easier to ignore. We've got to address it. We can't stick our heads in the sand and pretend the clash of the cultures doesn't exist (here). People feel it's one thing to think it, but then think they shouldn't say it (publicly)," Taubert said.

The rebuilt and freshly painted storefronts at the refurbished Ace Hi Plaza on Yosemite have recently come under fire for being too loud a color scheme, according to Jim Taubert, executive director of the Madera Redevelopment Agency. Taubert said the colors are the same as used in a new shopping center on Schnoor Avenue, just not in the same proportions, and the colors were approved by a newly formed city color approval committee.

Dry air flow easing area's smog for coming holiday

7/2/2008

By Ramona Frances

Poor air quality caused by smoke from lightning fires in neighboring counties has eased in Madera County, meteorologist Steve Johnson said Tuesday.

On the radar, Johnson said, there is one fire just south of Lake Isabella and one east of Sacramento big enough to show up on the radar and created by the same lightning storm. But most of the nearby smoke plumes appear to have been doused.

WIMBLEDON, England - One prematch glance Tuesday at the data displayed on those fancy, new digital scoreboards at staid, old Wimbledon provided a pretty persuasive case for why Venus Williams might be considered the woman to beat.

Stir Crazy: Adding a little red to the blue and white

Ah, fresh cherries! It's hard to resist a bowl full of the sweet little fruits. Even the dried and canned ones are great for snacks and baking. When I was growing up in Gilroy, we had two cherry trees behind the house. Granted, there wasn't much for a kid to do out in the sticks, so it's little wonder that when the cherries ripened it was a significant event in my life.

Also, cherries were probably the only tree fruit that I preferred at the peak of ripeness. I used to snitch apricots, nectarines, peaches and plums when they were still halfway between green and ripe.

A real holiday

7/2/2008

By Leon Emo

Okay, we've had St. Patrick's Day and Cinco de Mayo, now it's time for a real American holiday: Independence Day, or as it is sometimes called "the 4th of July." Oh sure, due to our ethnic diversity, there seems to be partying and different flags displayed almost monthly. But there is only one true flag in this country.

I believe it was James G. Blaine, three-time secretary of state, under Presidents Garfield, Arthur and Harrison, who said, "The United States is the only country that has a known birthday." And this Friday we will celebrate our independence as no other country can.
