Matilda Torres’ Michael Lucero gets a kill past the Justin Garza block during Thursday’s five-set loss. Lucero led the Toros with 20 kills.

The beginning of the match looked like it was going to be a three-set boys volleyball sweep for the Justin Garza Guardians. However, the Matilda Torres Toros, came alive with wins in the third and fourth set before losing in the deciding fifth set Thursday evening.

The Toros fell behind after losing 25-21 and 25-20 in the first two sets. Maybe sparked by watching the Torres football team receive its Div. IV Central Section championship rings, the Toros rallied for a 25-28 and 26-24 win in the third and fourth set before losing15-11 in the fifth set.

“Yesterday, we worked really hard on our defense the whole practice,” head coach Shelby Herspring said. “We learned how to dive, again. We kind of forgot against Madera. They are learning how to treat each other with respect and try not to coach each other. We are coming together as a team. We don’t miss seven serves anymore. Everyone is kind of finding their positions.”
