Pershing helps Planada victims

For The Madera Tribune

Gently-used books, along with new school supplies, are collected by Pershing Elementary from staff and families to donate to Planada Elementary School in Merced, which was flooded from January’s winter storm.

After the recent flooding in January, Pershing Elementary School teacher Amy Kuhn wanted to do something to help out victims in Planada, near Merced, especially the children.

Kuhn, who has helped lead Pershing’s annual canned food drive, asked staff and families to donate gently used books and school supplies to help Planada Elementary School students.

“It started when I was at home with COVID in January and was horrified watching all the news coverage regarding Planada Elementary flooding in Merced,” she said. I kept thinking, ‘this is not happening here in our valley.’ It was unreal and looked like a scene from a movie or hurricane Katrina.”
