For The Madera Tribune

Damon Ray Toole.

Damon Ray Toole, age 89, of Madera, California, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025, at his home in Coarsegold, California.

Born on April 15, 1936, in Frankfort, Kentucky, Damon was the beloved child of William Vernon Toole and Juanita Stiger. After graduating from Kentland High School in 1954, he served his country by joining the U.S. Marine Corps in 1956, for a two year tour of duty. His career spanned forty years, during which he worked as a service/safety manager for Petrolane petroleum gas, earning a reputation for his work with clean energy alternative motor fuels.

A devoted husband, Damon married Janice Claire VerHalen in 1958, and together they raised four children: Sharon Lynn, Craig Charles, Bradley Wayne and Damon Ray Jr. Damon’s Family was his greatest joy — whether coaching/cheering our boxing matches, and football games, or teaching us to appreciate the outdoors, camping and fishing. Some of our greatest memories are from around the camp fire.

Damon had a passion for auto racing, dedicating countless hours to building up competitive cars, and rebuilding week by week as necessary. He spent his life being the wind beneath the wings of others, humbly letting them shine while he was content to let anyone else take the spotlight. Damon had a generous heart and tried to humbly assist his less fortunate family members and friends with thoughtful gifts that would enhance their lives and help them to live more comfortably. Damon will be fondly remembered for his warm smile, generous spirit and unwavering integrity.

Damon is survived by his four children Sharon Lynn, Craig Charles, Bradley Wayne and Damon Ray Jr; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Janice to whom he was married and shared a life together with for nearly 58 years.

A memorial service will be held on August 2, at 10 a.m., at Calvary Cemetery, 28447 Ave 14 Madera, California, with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Casa Esperanza PO Box 13104, Bakersfield, California 93389 7197, or info@EsperanzaBakersfield.org, an organization close to Damon’s heart.

We will forever cherish Damon and the things that he taught us about honor and integrity! May he know how much he was loved and respected; and may he join his beloved for his heavenly eternity! Love you Papa!
