The old Madera County Courthouse, built in 1901, became the Madera County Museum in 1974.

The Madera County Museum will hold a special free Open House on Sunday, June 1, from noon to 4 p.m. In addition to free admission, free refreshments will be available.

The Open House will kick off the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Madera County Historical Society, which was founded in 1955. The first meeting was held on May 21, 1955, with 35 people in attendance. The Museum in the Old County Courthouse opened in 1974.

The old courthouse was completed in 1901, and partially burned by an arsonist on Christmas Eve in 1906. It was rebuilt afterwards, but the county government abandoned it in 1953 because it was too small.
