Highway patrol plans weekend checkpoints

The California Highway Patrol will set up a DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location this Labor Day weekend.

The checkpoint, according to CHP Sgt. Darren Long, will be set up in the Madera area, from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday.

“The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed in alcohol or drug-related crashes,” Long said. “Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely.”

Officers will look for signs of alcohol and drug impairment with officers checking for proper licensing. When possible, Long said, specially trained officers, will be able to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving. According to Long, the delay will only be momentary.

As a preventative measure, the checkpoint will be placed in an area where DUI arrests and collisions are more likely to occur.
