The city of Madera will host a delegation from its sister city, Yilan, Taiwan, from Sunday through Wednesday. Unlike past visits, Yilan’s mayor will be part of the visiting group.

“We are honored to host the mayor of Yilan, Tsung-Yuan Chiang, along with other members of the Yilan City organization, as well as the popular conductor Chien-Hsing (“Vincent”) Li and the Formosa melody Music Center of Yilan” said Madera Mayor Robert Poythress.

Yilan guests will tour various public facilities, businesses, schools, a visit to the Madera County Museum, and more thanks to arrangements by the city of Madera and the nonprofit Madera/Yilan Sister City Corporation, according to Sonia Alvarez of the city of Madera. The Yilan delegation is slated to visit Madera City Hall at 9 a.m. Monday for a presentation and tour of city departments.

Madera and Yilan have been sister cities for 22 years.

“Our relationship with Yilan is strong,” Poythress said, “and over the years we have enjoyed cultural exchanges as well as the exploration of business, trade, and educational opportunities.”

Musicians from the Formosa Melody Music Center of Yilan will perform a free concert of U.S. and Chinese folk songs at Madera South High School at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Sister City concert tickets are available in the City Clerk’s office, 47th Place Carpet One, the Madera District Chamber of Commerce, and The Madera Tribune.

Additional performances by the Formosa Melody Music Center will be: noon Monday at Cedar Creek Senior Living, 500 N. Westberry Blvd.; noon Tuesday for the Madera Rotary Club at the Madera Municipal Golf Course, 23200 Ave. 17; 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Howard Elementary School, 13878 Road 21 1/2; and 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sherman Thomas Charter School, 26339 Adell St.

“Take time to meet the delegation next week and enjoy outstanding musical performances that will be held in various venues,” said Poythress.
