Fake plates are a felony
California Highway Patrol Madera Officer McCaslin made a traffic stop on a commercial vehicle on southbound State Route 99, at Madera Avenue. During the stop, Officer McCaslin noticed two license plates attached to the front of the semi, overlapping each other. The front license plate had a suspicious print on it. A closer look revealed the outer license plate was a printed copy of a real license plate, attached to a metal plate. It did not belong to the vehicle, and was cove

Big run sinks Stallions
Wendy Alexander/The Madera Tribune Madera South’s Jeanette Duran connects on a mid-range jumper during the third quarter of Wednesday’s loss to the Mendota Aztecs. The early returns looked promising for the Madera South Stallions girls basketball team in its non-conference match-up against the Mendota Aztecs. Will we get the correct change back? Will they round up or will they round down? Who will get the benefit of the rounding, the customer or the store? These are all important questions. The news about the penny made me think about how valuable a penny can be. I remember a time, early

Treasurer’s wife fought to the end
For The Madera Tribune William Amer and his wife Catherine. He went to prison, and she got him a pardon. It was Saturday night in Madera, and the whole town was buzzing. A rumor was flying around town like a choice piece of gossip at a sewing circle. It spread from street corner to street corner like wildfire. Folks talked about nothing else. Could it be true? What was one to believe? Was the treasurer of Madera County really a thief? William M. Amer had been elected treasure
