Matilda Torres Toros and Madera South Stallions girls basketball teams gather at center court in the Torres gym in a sign of Madera Unified unity after the Toros defeated the Stallions to win the Cen-Cal Holiday Basketball Tournament championship at Torres on Saturday.
The Matilda Torres Toros girls basketball team faced a familiar foe heading into the Cen-Cal Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament championship game on Saturday — the Madera South Stallions.
The Toros already beat the Stallions at their tournament a few weeks ago, and will face each other twice in the North Yosemite League. However, Madera South took the lead midway through the first quarter and never looked back in a 61-32 victory to win their own tournament for the first time.
In the only tournament in the sports calendar in which Madera, Madera South, Matilda Torres and Liberty competes in, the Toros defeated Edison in the semifinals to advance to the title. Torres head coach Jose Villalobos almost had every Madera County school in the tournament, but Minarets dropped out. However, Yosemite and Chowchilla played in the tournament.
