For The Madera Tribune
Dr. Dow Ransom, shown here, was unable to save Thomas Desmond.
What’s in a name? Just ask the students at Jack G. Desmond Middle School. They know; their campus was named after a real Madera County pioneer cattleman and farmer.
Anyone who has been in the office of Desmond Middle School has seen the huge display on the wall. At the top is a portrait of Jack Desmond, and below him is a veritable museum of Desmond memorabilia.
There are photographs, letters, and cards. There are even some century-old branding irons. It is one of the finest collections of pioneer history around.
