The Madera South Stallions boys basketball team celebrates in the Valley Champions box after claiming the school’s first Central Section Championship after a 71-64 victory over McFarland on Saturday in Selland Arena.

FRESNO — The Madera South Stallions boys basketball team accomplished something no other Madera Unified School District team has done for 60 years — win a Central Section championship.

In capturing Madera South’s first boys basketball title, the 13th seeded Stallions overcame a double-digit deficit to defeat the seventh-seeded McFarland Cougars 71-64 Saturday for the Div. V Championship at Fresno’s Selland Arena.

“I love Madera,” head coach Corey Edmiston said. “I love working in Madera. If we can be the team that represents Madera and brings it home, even better. They are a hard-working group of kids and they represent the town. They have been so resilient this year. It wasn’t like that last year.”
