Stallions fall in 2nd half of title game to Immanuel

The Madera South Stallions seemed to have the Madera South Shootout Championship game under control until a fourth

quarter drought tipped the scales.


The Immanuel-Reedley Eagles went on an 8-0 run to open the fourth quarter while the Stallions committed five turnovers and missed five shots. The Eagles also took advantage of the Stallions’ shooting woes for a 40-33 victory Saturday at Madera South.


The Stallions shot just 24 percent from the field and made just two 3-pointers out of 20 attempts. They were outscored 21-13 in the second half of the loss.


Seven different Stallions scored in the game, however no player scored in double-figures. Mayra Ceballos led the Stallions with eight points with eight rebounds and three blocks.


Brianna Lorta added six points with five rebounds and Jocelyn Barrera and Jalissa Kirkpatrick scored five points each. Barrera had five rebounds with four steals while Kirkpatrick also pulled down five rebounds.


The Eagles jumped out to a 6-3 lead before the Stallions got a layup from Brianna Lorta on a Kirkpatrick assist and 3-pointers from Alannah Ward and Kirkpatrick for a 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.


After Immanuel made a layup, Ceballos made a pair of free throws for a 4-point lead.


The Eagles cut the lead to one, but the Stallions got an offensive putback from Mayrlin Vasquez and a pair of free throws from Barrera for a 16-11 lead.


After an Immanuel putback, Barrera found Lorta for a layup and Ceballos made two free throws for a 20-13 lead with a minute left.


However, Immanuel took advantage of three straight steals to close the first half with six straight points to cut the lead to 20-19 at the half.


The Eagles extended the run 9-0 for a 22-20 lead in the third quarter.


Barrera hit a short jumper to tie the score. After a Immanuel free throw, Jasmine Marrero hit a pair of free throws for a 24-23 lead. Vasquez added a layup for a 26-23 lead.


The Eagles closed the third quarter with a pair of layups to take a 27-26 lead into the fourth quarter.


The Eagles added two more layups for an 8-0 run and a 31-26 lead.


Lorta made a layup and Kirkpatrick put back an offensive rebound to cut the lead to 31-30 with thee minutes left in the game. Ceballos answered an Immanuel bucket with an offensive putback, but Immanuel scored three layups to open a 37-32 lead.


The Stallions missed on three 3-point attempts before Barrera made a free throw to cut the lead to four. The Stallions still had a chance when Lorta came down with a rebound after a missed free throw.


Madera South missed a shot and then missed a free throw. The Eagles made a pair of free throws to close out the game with a 40-33 victory.
