Cook stuffing in the turkey or in a casserole dish, it is your choice.
About half the people in my family called it dressing, and the other half called it stuffing. I think as a kid, I used the term dressing, but now I find myself saying stuffing. No matter what you call it, it is the same thing.
My family has prepared it every Thanksgiving for generations. There are a few who don’t like it at all, and that’s okay, too. We actually do stuff it into the turkey before beginning the roasting process. No one has ever become ill from doing it that way.
Nowadays, I think a lot of folks choose extra caution and bake it as a separate casserole. I have always done that with the extra stuffing that won’t fit into the turkey, but it honestly tastes much better when it has been cooked inside the bird. Just a matter of opinion, I suppose.
