Madera High School student-athlete Roberto Lopez died in a solo motorcycle accident near the high school.

Madera Police Department officers responded to the accident early Thursday morning on Olive Avenue near 6th street.

Lopez, who was a member of the Madera Coyotes football team, lost his life as a result of the injuries, according to Madera PD. He had aspirations of continuing his education at the university level.

“Roberto was so full of life,” Madera Coyotes football coach Kenny Paolinelli said. “He loved the game of football and his teammates even more. He was a ball of energy and loved to compete. Football was the bridge that connected him to his peers after moving from Mexico. His infectious smile and personality will be truly missed. My heart aches for his family and our community.”

Madera High School staff has grief counselors on campus to support the students as they mourn.

The exact cause of the accident is under investigation.
