Letters: Americans mostly agree on things

A recent Associated Press poll found that most Americans agree on the core issues of our democracy. And, except as to a few issues, there is little difference between Democrats and Republicans.

Right to vote: 91 percent

Equal protection under the law: 91 percent

Freedom of speech: 90 percent

Right to privacy: 88 percent

Freedom of religion: 84 percent

Right to peacefully assemble: 83 percent

Freedom of the press: 77 percent

More Democrats than Republicans believe that immigrants are core to our country’s identity. More Republicans than Democrats think a culture grounded in Christian values and beliefs is an essential characteristic. The right to keep and bear arms is supported by more Republicans than Democrats. And most of us support a woman’s right to choose.
