Two Madera County farmworkers were honored with a proclamation during Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting for their quick and heroic actions last month in La Vina, when a school bus carrying a group of students burst into flames.

The two farmworkers, Carlos Perea Romero and Angel Zarco, were fixing their tractor when they saw a cloud of thick smoke coming out from the back of the bus at Avenue 8 and Road 23 1/2. They rushed to the door of the bus, alerting the driver. They immediately evacuated the students off the bus.

Moments later, the back of the bus burst into flames. All the students made it out safely without any injuries due to the immediate action taken by the farmworkers and the bus driver.
