Coyotes almost pitch shutout at Cen-Cal

The Madera Coyotes girls took control of its Cen-Cal Holiday Tournament quarterfinal game with LeGrand from the beginning to record a 48-4 victory.


The Coyotes didn’t allow LeGran dto score until there were a little more than four minutes left during a running-clock fourth quarter.


Eight of the nine Coyotes that played scored in the rout, led by Brooke Houghton with 10 points. The Coyotes also pulled down 40 rebounds with 26 on the offensive glass to go with 19 steals and 36 turnovers.


The Coyotes’ defense dominated LeGrand so much that LeGrand didn’t even hit the rim on shots in the first quarter and found the rim just twice in the second quarter.


Mariah Taddei scored seven points and three Coyotes scored six points — Ashley Hernandez, Rhynne Mitchell and Eliana Jaramillo.


Hernandez pulled down nine rebounds to tie for the team lead with Janiah Warren.


The Coyotes scored the first 44 points of the game that began with a Hougton free throw.


Hernandez followed with a driving layup. Two minutes later, Aaliyah String found Houghton for a layup. Mitchell made a layup and Jaramillo turned a steal into a layup.


Taddei sank a pair of free throws for the Coyotes. Jaramillo picked up another steal and made a layup. Hernandez put back a miss for a 15-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.


Janiah Warren picked up a steal and hit a jumper to open the second quarter scoring. Hernandez picked up a steal and fed Houghton for a layup.


After a steal from Breann West, Lilly Smith made a driving layup, and then got a pass from Mitchell for a layup. She continued her scoring with a pull-up 12-footer for a 25-0 lead.


Taddei sank a free throw, but Warren got an offensive rebound on the second. Mitchell found Jaramillo for a layup for a 28-0 lead.


Taddei put back a miss to close out the first half scoring with a 30-0 lead.


In the second half, Houghton came up with a steal, passed to Hernandez, who passed it back to her for a layup. Houghton added a free throw for a 33-0 lead.


Jaramillo found Warren for a layup off an inbounds pass. String hit a free thorw, but Hernandez turned a Jaramillo offensive rebound into a layup.


Jaramillo found Taddei for a layup. Then, Mitchell sank a pair of free throws, and String picked up a steal and fed Mitchell for a layup and a 44-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter.


Neither team scored for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. LeGrand made a layup for its first points with 4:02 left to play. They added a driving layup two minutes later.


Houghton hit a short jumper and String put back a missed free throw to close out the scoring with a 48-4 win.
