Madera County Youth Football and Cheer will host its sixth annual Q’N For Kids cooking contest on Aug. 3 at the American Legion, Post 11, 17408 Road 26.
MCYFC president Dennis Edwards said this is a fun time for kids and the event raised $2,600 last year.
“That goes to the equipment,” he said. “We used to be sponsored by the school district, but they stopped. We charge the least amount of anyone in the Valley. It is from $100-$150. A lot of the money goes to the scholarship for the kids. Our motto is we don’t turn anyone away.”
Each cooking team will turn in tri-tip and pork ribs for a chance at cash prizes. The cost to enter the barbecue is $50 per team with an Aug. 1 deadline. The meat will be provided for teams to cook.
Also, cooking teams are also required to have a carnival game for children to play. The team that earns the most tickets through their game will also receive a prize.
“It’s a fun time for the kids,” Edwards said.
The community is invited to this event. The MCYFC will also be selling barbecue plates for $10 for one meat and $12 meats. There will also be a full bar for adults.
“Last year, we sold 200 barbecue plates and we had eight competitors,” Edwards said. “Last year, we cooked about 40 tri-tips and 27 slabs of ribs.”
The MCYFC will play in a new league this year — the CenCal League — which has 10 teams. There will be five teams representing each of the Clovis Unified schools, four from Fresno and Madera.
“Last year, we had 67 players and about 25 cheerleaders,” Edwards said. “This year, we have well over 100 kids.”
