Stallions run by Eagles in tournament rout

The Madera South Stallions played a complete game and led from start to finish for a 63-38 victory over the Firebaugh Eagles on the first day of the Madera Shootout in Joe Flores Gym.

The Stallions outscored the Eagles 30-15 in the second and third quarters in the victory and had three players score in double figures and five score eight or more points.

Lexi Eller led the Stallions with 14 points. Arelis Chavez scored 13 points to go with nine rebounds and five offensive boards. Aleecia Rosel also scored 13 points and hit three 3-pointers. Jackie Cortez also hit three 3-pointer for nine points and Darriah Larey scored eight points with five rebounds.

Firebaugh opened the game with a 3-pointer, but the Stallions answered with a Rosel 3-pointer and two free throws from Taylor Rogers.

Firebaugh scored on back-to-back layups for a 7-5 lead. The Stallions got a bucket from Larey to tie the score at seven. After a Firebaugh layup to give them its last lead of the game, Cortez hit a 3-pointer and Larey hit a short jumper.

Another Firebaugh layup led to a short bucket from Emily Montoya on an assist from Rosel. After a Montoya steal, Rosel hit a jumper after a Larey offensive rebound.

Eller found Chavez for a bucket down low for an 18-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Firebaugh converted on a 3-point play to open the second quarter. Madera South then scored 10 of the next 12 points to take control of the game.

Off a rebound, Eller found Kim Prudente, who hit Chavez for a layup. After a Firebaugh jumper, Eller made two free throws and Rosel found Eller on an inbounds pass for a layup.

After a Chavez rebound, Cortez found Rosel for a layup. Chavez had three chances to score on the next possession and made the last one for a 28-16 lead.

After a Firebaugh jumper, Rosel pulled down a rebound and found Eller for a layup and a 12-point lead.

Madera South closed the half with an Eller jumper and a Rosel 3-pointer for a 35-18 lead.

Firebaugh scored the first bucket of the second half, but Eller hit back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the lead to 21. After a Firebaugh layup, Rosel hit a 3-pointer for a 44-22 lead.

Madera South closed the third quarter with a layup from Larey on an assist from Cortez and a jumper from Nadaria Price for a 48-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Chvez opened the quarter with a layup and made a free throw. A Cortez three-pointer, a Chavez putback and a Chavez jumper gave the Stallions a 58-28 lead.

Firebaugh scored four straight points before Cortez banked in a 3-pointer. The Eagles scored six straight points before Larey hit a five-footer for the 63-38 final.
